The work will endeavour to collate best practice and identify any areas staff and students feel improvements could be made. Personal tutoring will always be responsive but we have committed to using it proactively too. Across all schools the aim is to embed five themes, or pillars, in tutor sessions across all levels; this should complement existing provision of this support through other means, such as employability modules. The difference here is that personal tutoring provides a sustained focus on these key areas throughout the programme. The five pillars of personal tutoring are outlined below.
A resource has been developed to help schools plan where and how these five pillars might feature in personal tutoring through undergraduate and postgraduate taught student journeys.
The Five Pillars of Personal Tutoring
|We provide proactive and responsive general support for students academic and pastoral needs. This includes helping students understand and manage the implications of any personal circumstances on their academic progress and success.||We will support students to identify where their strengths and weaknesses are in terms of academic study skills and take up opportunities to develop these, such as through learning development workshops offered by The Library or the English Language Centre.||We will support students to reflect holistically on the various pieces of feedback they have received formally and informally on assessed work, and identify steps they can take to improve their performance in future assessments and move into the next grade band (i.e. from a 2:2 to a 2:1).||We will support students to consider their career ambitions and how they can make the most of the support on offer to achieve those ambitions.||We will encourage students to engage with extra-curricular opportunities beyond their programme to develop transferable skills, build social networks and contribute to the development of the University.|

Although one of the pillars focusses on careers support, Personal Tutors are not envisaged as becoming guidance practitioners, but as able to signpost resources and raise queries around employability at appropriate times.
